Mrs. Flaim: when the garden becomes design and history becomes collection

Antonia Rosa Flaim, called Tona, was not a background figure. She was the creative leadership of the company. Dedicating a design line to her is not a sentimental tribute: it is the translation of a true story into a contemporary product.

Heritage & History

Mrs. Flaim Collection

There’s one way to know if a brand has real roots: see if its stories stand the test of time. The Signora Flaim collection does not bear the name of an imaginary muse. It bears the name of a real woman-Antonia Rosa Flaim-who shaped Moranduzzo’s aesthetic for fifty years without anyone really knowing it.

Who was Mrs. Flaim

Antonia Rosa Flaim, called Tona, was the wife of Dario Moranduzzo, the founder. They had met in Merano in 1946, soon after Dario’s discharge from the army. She was a wool merchant – practical, down-to-earth, with her eyes open to the world. They married and moved to Florence, where Dario was building Italy’s first Christmas decoration factory.

Tona did not only manage the store on Via Santo Spirito. She was the one who decided the colors, the proportions, the aesthetics of the products. She was the critical eye that separated what worked from what did not. And she had a visceral passion for the garden: the Scalea farm estate with its four lakes, the orchid greenhouse she grew herself, Villa Augusta-the Florentine restaurant of the 1950s and 1960s where Tino Scotti and Mike Bongiorno were regular guests.

Tona kept a monkey at home and grew orchids in a private greenhouse. She was eccentric, brilliant, difficult in the best sense of the word-the kind of person who is never satisfied with “good enough.” And she understood, before anyone else, that beauty must live outside as much as inside.

The Compasso d’Oro: Italy’s most awarded design

Recognition

Compasso d’Oro ADI – the most important award in Italian industrial design

The Signora Flaim line is designed by Roberto Giacomucci, winner of the Compasso d’Oro-the most prestigious award in industrial design worldwide, given by the ADI (Association for Industrial Design). The choice of a designer of this caliber signals a clear intention: Moranduzzo does not want to be perceived as a seasonal Christmas company, but as an Italian brand of fine living.

The Compasso d’Oro has existed since 1954-it is older than the German Red Dot Design Award (1955) and the American Good Design (1950). It is the award that has honored Achille Castiglioni, Ettore Sottsass, and Enzo Mari. To have chosen him as the designer of the Signora Flaim line is not a commercial decision: it is a positioning statement.

The products: design that inhabits the garden all year round

Planter Arlecchina Signora Flaim - garden furniture Italian design

Harlequin Planter – Mrs. Flaim Collection. Designer garden furniture for terraces and gardens.

The Signora Flaim collection is a line of outdoor and indoor furniture made of machined metal with an Italian finish. Planters, trellises, outdoor storage: each piece is designed to last for years outdoors without losing elegance. Materials are selected to withstand the seasons-painted steel with matte finishes in shades of the Moranduzzo palette: terracotta, sage, slate, anthracite.

The curvilinear detail that characterizes many of the pieces-the wavy edge of the Splash planters, the flowing lines of the Arlecchina series-is not an aesthetic quirk. It is a direct reference to Moranduzzo’s patent heritage: the curvilinear leaves of the Christmas tree patented in 1978 by Dario Moranduzzo. The collection carries forward, in a garden design key, the same vision that transformed the Christmas industry forty years earlier.

From seasonal business to lifestyle brand

The strategy that emerges from the Signora Flaim collection is clear: Moranduzzo does not want to be perceived only as the manufacturer of Christmas trees and cribs-no matter how excellent. It wants to be an Italian brand of beauty that inhabits the home and garden all year round.

It is the same vision Tona Flaim had when she grew orchids in her greenhouse and transformed Villa Augusta into the living room of the Florentine elite in the 1960s. Luxury is not seasonal. Beauty does not go on vacation in January. The collection that bears her name is a contemporary response to that insight seventy years ago.
